Fred Shonkwiler, MPT, FAFS, CEAS
Fred has become known for his specialty in the treatment of neck and back pain. His integrated-holistic approach comes from specialized training from two prestigious post-graduate institutes. Fred received extensive instruction from the Postural Restoration Institute (PRI) on biomechanics (joints), myokinematics (muscles), and neuromuscular patterns. The respiratory system and the influence of the diaphragm on the whole body is an integral piece to this holistic approach. The goal of this approach is to restore three dimensional postural symmetry to allow the body to reciprocate and function better.
Fred also studied at the world-renowned Gray Institute and completed their 10 month fellowship program in 2010, earning the title Fellow of Applied Functional Science (FAFS). This distinguished approach combines the biological sciences, physical science, and behavioral science for a combined integrated approach to treating pain and dysfunction. This approach has become most well known for its work in sports performance and athletics. Fred has the ability to consult, analyze, assess, rehabilitate, restore, train and condition individuals of all levels of functional ability. This fellowship has equipped Fred to be the foremost leader in injury prevention, performance, and rehabilitation in all of sports. He is proud to bring this training and expertise to Northwest Missouri region.
In addition, Fred is uniquely qualified and credentialed in treating industrial workplace injuries and provides on-site consulting for ergonomics and work injury prevention. Fred also has a specialty in the biomechanics of the golf swing and trains golfers to swing better, feel better, and score better.
Niki Hilgenberg, MPT Masters in Physical Therapy
Niki graduated in 2004 from the University of Missouri with her Masters in Physical Therapy. Niki enjoys working with a variety of patients, but has a special interest in working with athletes, pregnancy-related PT issues and aquatic training. As a veteran of long distance running, her dream as a physical therapist has been to develop and implement a program for runners that helps prevent injuries.
Niki has completed multiple marathons, including three world marathon majors: Boston, Chicago and New York. She hopes to one day run the London and Berlin marathons. Niki also spent a summer semester of her college career in Costa Rica, studying Spanish and learning about the Latin culture, from food and entertainment to healthcare.
Her other interests include spending time with her children Ronen and Arianna, and husband David; traveling, camping and playing volleyball.
Brent Colgan, MPT Masters in Physical Therapy
Brent was born and raised in St. Joseph and has been treating patients locally since graduating from Southwest Baptist University in 1998. Brent offers a compassionate hands-on approach to physical therapy treatment. He has a special interest in patients with balance concerns and general debilitation. Following physical therapy school he completed a twelve month orthopedic manual therapy residency course under the internationally known Norwegian specialist Ola Grimsby. Brent's experience gives him an edge in helping patients of all ages return to the activities they enjoy. He is committed to serving his patients with high quality care with a personal touch.
Brent and his wife Julie have two beautiful girls (Bailey and Paige). He enjoys spending time with his family and getting outdoors whenever possible.
Janet Beard, MSPT Physical Therapist
Janet Beard has the experience of treating patients locally in outpatient, home health and nursing home settings. She received her Master of Science in Physical Therapy from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri (1991). It is there she discovered her passion for quality patient care and clinical training. Janet is an APTA Credentialed Clinical Instructor and has been working with PT/PTA students for the entirety of her career. She also strives to provide quality care and education to her patients to encourage active participation in their treatment program and improve their function.
Janet and her husband, Ron, have four children (Ryan, Danielle, David and Brianna) and a granddaughter (Liberty). She enjoys working outdoors in the yard, walking, volunteering with Special Olympics, Second Harvest Food Bank, St. Joseph Christian School and visiting residents at local care facilities.
Trina Day, DPT
Trina began working at Spine and Sport Physical Therapy in August of 2014. She completed her undergraduate education at Northwest Missouri State University in 2011, and graduated from Rockhurst University in May of 2014 as a Doctor of Physical Therapy. Trina completed clinical affiliations in a variety of settings, but primarily the outpatient orthopedic setting.
She enjoys working with people of all ages and types of injuries, and enjoys manual therapy and treatment of the spine. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family, shopping, playing volleyball and staying active.
Nicole Burge, DPT, ATC
Nicole began working at Spine and Sport Physical Therapy in June of 2016. She received her Bachelor's degree in Sports Medicine and Athletic Training from Missouri State University in 2013 and graduated from Rockhurst University in May of 2016 as a Doctor of Physical Therapy. While at Rockhurst she completed a two year graduate assistant position as a Certified Athletic Trainer and worked with a variety of sports such as soccer, basketball, volleyball, baseball and lacrosse. She has experience working with many different patient populations and athletes of all levels including middle school, high school, collegiate and professional.
Nicole has a special interest in concussion rehabilitation and injury prevention training. In her free time she enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, being outdoors and staying active.
Andrea Allen, PTA
Andrea Allen graduated from Missouri Western State University in 2013 as a Physical Therapist Assistant. Since graduating Andrea has worked in multiple physical therapy settings including skilled nursing, assisted living and outpatient.
Andrea and her husband Skip have two wonderful children, Adrian and Hayden. As a family they enjoy spending time outdoors, fishing and running around to all of the kids different sporting activities.
Hilary Maberry, PTA
Hillary Maberry graduated from Missouri Western State University in 2013 as a Physical Therapy Assistant. In addition, she also received a Bachelor's Degree in Health & Exercise Science in 2015. Since graduating, Hillary has enjoyed working with a variety of clients from athletes to aquatic patients.
Hillary enjoys playing a variety of sports as well as visiting her family and friends in her hometown of Meadville.
Nathan Whitmer, PTA
Nathan completed the Physical Therapist Assistant program in the summer of 2017, adding to his previously completed bachelor of science in Health and Physical Education. Nathan spent nearly a decade working with high school athletes on the field and in the weight room.
After working hours he can be found with his family gardening, hunting, hiking, fishing and planning his next adventure. Nathan and his wife Becky also have two incredible children, Blaikley and Nolan.
